Condition

Phimosis (tight foreskin)

Also known as: Tight foreskin, balanitis

Phimosis means the foreskin is too tight to pull back over the head of the penis. In young boys this is usually normal and improves with age. In older boys and men it can be caused by scarring or repeated infection, and it may need treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a tight foreskin always need circumcision?

No. Steroid cream with gentle stretching often helps milder cases. Circumcision is usually considered when this does not work or when there is scarring or repeated infection.
