Men’s health illustration

Stapler circumcision, often called ZSR circumcision after the device used, removes the foreskin with a disposable stapler that cuts and seals in one step. It is quicker than conventional circumcision and usually gives a neat result. Like any procedure, it has side effects you should know about.

Common, expected effects

  • Swelling of the penis skin for one to two weeks
  • Mild pain or discomfort, controlled with simple painkillers
  • Small spots of bleeding on the dressing in the first day
  • Sensitivity of the head of the penis as it gets used to being uncovered
  • Staples falling off gradually over two to four weeks

Less common side effects

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 1–3: rest, keep the dressing on as advised, loose underwear
  2. Day 3–7: back to office work for most men; gentle showering as advised
  3. Week 2–4: swelling settles, staples fall off
  4. About 4–6 weeks: sexual activity, once healing is complete and your doctor agrees

Who should not have stapler circumcision

Very small children and some men with specific anatomy, active infection or bleeding disorders may be better suited to another technique. Boys with hypospadias should not be circumcised before repair. Your urologist will advise.
