Cystone is one of the most searched kidney stone medicines in India. It is a herbal (Ayurvedic) preparation made by Himalaya, sold as tablets and syrup without a prescription. Many patients ask Dr. Nitin Negi whether Cystone can dissolve their stone or replace treatment. This guide explains what Cystone is, how it is commonly used, its side effects and, most importantly, when it is not enough.

What is Cystone?

Cystone is a polyherbal formulation. Its label lists ingredients such as Didymocarpus pedicellata (shilapushpa), Saxifraga ligulata (pashanbheda), Rubia cordifolia (manjishtha) and Cyperus scariosus, among others. It is marketed to support urinary health, help small stones pass and reduce the tendency to form new ones.

What is Cystone used for?

  • As a supportive measure for small kidney or ureteric stones that are expected to pass on their own
  • To reduce burning while passing urine
  • As part of a prevention routine in people who form stones repeatedly

The scientific evidence for herbal stone remedies comes mostly from small or laboratory studies. Cystone is not a substitute for proven treatment when a stone is large, blocking the kidney or causing infection.

Cystone tablet dosage

Follow the dose printed on the pack or advised by your doctor. Labels commonly suggest two tablets two or three times a day for adults for a few weeks, followed by a lower maintenance dose. Children’s doses are lower and should be guided by a doctor. Drink plenty of water while taking it; fluids do more to help a stone pass than any tablet.

Side effects of Cystone

Cystone is generally well tolerated. Reported side effects are uncommon and usually mild:

  • Stomach upset, nausea or loose motions
  • Allergic reactions such as rash (stop and seek advice)
  • A change in urine colour

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have kidney disease, diabetes, or take other regular medicines, as safety data in these groups is limited.

Can Cystone dissolve kidney stones?

There is no reliable evidence that Cystone dissolves an established stone. Most calcium stones, the commonest type, do not dissolve with any tablet. Uric acid stones can sometimes be dissolved, but with specific prescription medicines that make the urine less acidic, not with herbal products.

Stone sizeChance of passing on its ownWhat usually helps

When Cystone is not enough

See a urologist instead of relying on Cystone if you have:

  • A stone larger than about 5 mm on the scan
  • Pain that keeps coming back for more than two to four weeks
  • Fever or chills, which can mean an infected blocked kidney, an emergency
  • A single kidney, pregnancy, or known kidney disease
  • Rising creatinine in blood tests

A stone that blocks the kidney for weeks can damage it permanently, even if the pain settles. Modern laser kidney stone treatment removes most stones without any cut.

A urologist’s advice

Cystone can be part of a sensible plan for small stones, alongside plenty of water, less salt and a check-up. But it should not delay a scan or proper treatment. If you are taking Cystone for a stone, get a follow-up ultrasound or CT to make sure the stone has actually passed.

This guide is for general information. Do not start, stop or change any medicine without speaking to your doctor. If you have kidney stone pain with fever, vomiting or very little urine, see a urologist the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How long should Cystone be taken?

Usually a few weeks, as directed on the pack or by your doctor. If a stone has not passed in two to four weeks, see a urologist rather than continuing for months.

Is Cystone safe for the kidneys?

It is generally well tolerated, but people with kidney disease should take it only after medical advice.

Can Cystone be taken with tamsulosin?

They are sometimes used together for small stones. Ask your doctor before combining medicines.
