HOLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate)

HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) is an advanced, minimally invasive laser surgery used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland enlarges and blocks the normal flow of urine. Unlike traditional open or TURP surgery, HoLEP provides long-lasting results by removing the obstructing prostate tissue completely using a precision Holmium laser. This procedure is highly effective, safe, and suitable even for patients with very large prostate sizes. With shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and minimal complications, HoLEP has become a gold-standard treatment for enlarged prostate in modern urology.

Why HoLEP is Performed

  • Relief from Urinary Symptoms
Patients with BPH often face symptoms like frequent urination, weak urine flow, incomplete bladder emptying, or nighttime urination. HoLEP effectively removes the excess prostate tissue, restoring normal urine flow.
  • Treatment for Large Prostate Glands
Traditional procedures like TURP may not be as effective for larger prostates, whereas HoLEP can be safely performed regardless of the prostate size.
  • Durable & Long-Term Solution
Since the obstructing prostate tissue is completely removed, the chances of regrowth or recurrence are significantly lower compared to other treatments.

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Anesthesia & Preparation
The patient is given regional or general anesthesia. A resectoscope is inserted through the urethra, so no external cuts are required.
  2. Laser Enucleation
The Holmium laser is used to carefully separate and remove the obstructive prostate tissue from its capsule. This allows precise removal with minimal blood loss.
  3. Tissue Morcellation
The removed tissue is broken into smaller pieces using a morcellator and taken out of the bladder.
  4. Completion
A catheter is placed temporarily to ensure smooth urine flow during healing, which is usually removed within 24–48 hours.

Benefits of HoLEP

  • Minimally Invasive & Bloodless Surgery – Reduced risk of bleeding makes it safe for patients on blood thinners.
  • Applicable for All Prostate Sizes – From small to extremely large prostates, HoLEP is effective in every case.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay – Most patients are discharged within 1–2 days.
  • Faster Recovery – Patients resume normal activities within a week.
  • Long-Lasting Relief – Very low retreatment rates compared to TURP or medical therapy.
  • Safe for High-Risk Patients – Including those with cardiac conditions or other comorbidities.

Recovery & Aftercare

  • Patients may experience mild burning or increased frequency of urination for a few days, which gradually improves.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding strenuous activities for a short period ensures smooth recovery.
  • Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor healing and urinary function.
