RIRS Laser Kidney Stone Treatment in Jaipur

RIRS (retrograde intrarenal surgery) in Jaipur is Dr. Nitin Negi’s preferred treatment for most kidney stones up to about 2 cm: a flexible telescope reaches the stone through the urine passage and a Holmium laser turns it to dust, with no cut on the body.

Dr. Nitin Negi – RIRS Expert in Jaipur

With a remarkable track record and 12+ years of experience, Dr. Nitin Negi is recognized as the best urologist in Jaipur for advanced kidney stone treatment. He is proficient in managing complicated and recurrent stone cases using RIRS technology. At Manglam Plus Medicity & Vs Medi Hub, Jaipur, Dr. Negi performs RIRS using Rajasthan’s first 150-Watt Holmium Laser, ensuring precision, safety, and superior outcomes. His expertise guarantees optimal stone clearance with minimal risk.

How RIRS works, step by step

  1. Under anaesthesia, a thin flexible ureteroscope is passed through the urethra and bladder into the ureter and kidney.
  2. A camera on the scope shows the stone on a screen; the scope bends to reach stones in every part of the kidney, including the lower pole.
  3. A Holmium laser fibre breaks the stone into fine dust and tiny fragments; larger pieces are removed with a small basket.
  4. A temporary DJ stent is usually left in place to let the kidney drain while it heals.

Who is a good candidate for RIRS?

  • Kidney stones up to about 2 cm, including hard stones and lower-pole stones
  • Patients on blood thinners or with bleeding tendency, where a keyhole is less suitable
  • Obese patients or those with unusual kidney anatomy
  • Stones left behind after ESWL

RIRS may be less suitable for very large stone loads, where PCNL clears the kidney faster.

Recovery after RIRS

Most people go home the same or next day. Mild burning, urgency and pink urine are common while the stent is in; plenty of fluids help. Desk work is usually possible in two to three days. The stent is removed in a short day-care procedure after one to three weeks, followed by a scan to confirm the kidney is clear.

Preparing for RIRS

  • A recent CT scan (KUB) to map the stone’s size, position and hardness
  • Urine culture: any infection is treated before surgery
  • Blood tests and, for older patients, a heart check
  • Stopping or adjusting blood thinners only as advised by your doctors
  • About six hours of fasting before anaesthesia

Sometimes a stent is placed a week or two before RIRS to widen a narrow ureter, which makes the main procedure smoother.

Risks of RIRS and how they are kept low

RIRS is one of the safest stone procedures. Common, short-lived effects are burning, frequency and blood-tinged urine while the stent is in. Less common problems include fever from infection, small residual fragments that need a second session, and, rarely, injury to the ureter. Treating infection before surgery, using an access sheath, controlled laser settings and careful technique keep these risks low.

Cost of RIRS in Jaipur

The cost depends on stone size and number, whether a stent is placed, single-use or reusable scope, hospital room category and length of stay, and insurance coverage. Most insurance policies cover RIRS. The clinic provides a written estimate after the CT scan. See kidney stone treatment cost in Jaipur.

After RIRS: a simple day-by-day guide

WhenWhat to expectWhat to do
Day 0–1Burning, urgency, pink urineDrink water steadily; take prescribed medicines
Day 2–3Most discomfort settlesReturn to light activity and desk work
Week 1–3Stent may cause mild flank ache when passing urineAvoid heavy exercise; keep the stent-removal appointment
After stent removalBack to normalCheck scan; start a stone-prevention plan

Call the clinic if you have fever, cannot pass urine, see heavy bleeding with clots, or have pain that tablets do not control.

Why the laser matters in RIRS

RIRS depends on breaking the stone into particles small enough to pass or wash out. A high-power Holmium laser, such as the 150W system used by Dr. Negi, can “dust” even hard calcium oxalate monohydrate stones quickly, which shortens anaesthesia time and lowers the need for a second session. Fine laser fibres also keep the flexible scope able to bend into the lower part of the kidney, where stones are hardest to reach.

Hard stones, multiple stones and both kidneys

  • Hard stones (high CT density) that fail ESWL usually respond well to laser RIRS.
  • Multiple stones in one kidney can often be cleared in one sitting if the total size is moderate.
  • Stones in both kidneys are sometimes treated in the same session; otherwise the two sides are staged a few weeks apart.
  • A single kidney or poor kidney function: RIRS avoids any puncture of the kidney, which can make it the gentlest option.

Is RIRS safe for older patients?

Yes. Because RIRS involves no puncture of the kidney and little bleeding, it is often the gentlest option for older patients and those with heart disease, diabetes or on blood thinners. The anaesthesia team assesses fitness beforehand, and most older patients go home the next day. For very large stones, the stone may be treated in two shorter sessions rather than one long one.

Frequently asked questions

Is RIRS better than PCNL?

For stones up to about 2 cm, RIRS avoids any cut and has a quicker recovery. For larger stones PCNL usually clears more stone in one sitting. The right choice depends on your scan.

Is a stent always needed after RIRS?

Not always, but it is commonly placed for one to three weeks to keep the kidney draining while swelling settles. It is removed in a quick day-care procedure.

How many days of rest are needed after RIRS?

Most patients rest for two to three days and then return to office work. Heavy exercise is best avoided until the stent is removed.

Can RIRS remove stones from both kidneys?

Sometimes both sides can be treated in the same sitting, depending on stone size and the patient’s overall health. This is planned case by case.
