What does an andrologist treat?
Andrology is the branch of urology that cares for men’s reproductive and sexual health. As a urologist with a special interest in andrology, Dr. Nitin Negi treats problems that many men find hard to talk about, in a private, unhurried consultation at the Uro - Andrology Centre in Nirman Nagar or at ManglamPlus Medicity Hospital.
| Concern | What it can mean | Learn more |

| Ejaculating too soon | Premature ejaculation, the most common sexual complaint in men | See below |
| Unable to conceive after a year of trying | Low sperm count or quality, varicocele, blockage or hormone problems | Male infertility |
| Dull ache or swollen veins above the testis | Varicocele | Varicocele treatment |
| Low energy, low sex drive | Possible low testosterone | Hormone tests at consultation |
| Tight foreskin, pain or infection | Phimosis or balanitis | Circumcision |
Premature ejaculation
Premature ejaculation is common and treatable. Treatment usually combines simple behavioural techniques, counselling where anxiety plays a part, and medicines that delay ejaculation, prescribed after assessing your overall health. Many men also have erection difficulties at the same time, and treating both together works best.
How a consultation works
- Private history: your symptoms, health, medicines and lifestyle, discussed in confidence.
- Examination: a brief, respectful physical check.
- Tests if needed: blood sugar, lipids, hormones (testosterone, prolactin, FSH, LH), semen analysis, and Doppler ultrasound.
- Plan: a clear explanation of the cause and the options, from lifestyle changes and medicines to procedures.
Why men delay, and why they shouldn’t
Embarrassment keeps many men from seeking help for years. Yet sexual and fertility problems are medical conditions with effective treatments, and erection problems can be an early warning of diabetes or heart disease. Medicines bought without a prescription can interact dangerously with heart medicines and hide treatable causes.
Low testosterone in men
Testosterone falls gradually with age, and faster with obesity, diabetes and some medicines. Low levels can cause low sex drive, erection problems, tiredness, low mood and loss of muscle. Diagnosis needs morning blood tests on more than one occasion. Treatment starts with the cause and lifestyle; testosterone replacement is considered only when clearly needed, as it can reduce sperm production in men who want children.
Healthy habits for sexual and reproductive health
- Regular exercise and a healthy weight improve erections and hormone levels
- Stopping smoking improves blood flow within months
- Limiting alcohol helps erections and sperm quality
- Controlling blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol protects the small blood vessels
- Avoiding hot baths, tight underwear and laptops on the lap helps sperm production
- Good sleep and stress management
When to see an andrologist
- Erection problems on most occasions for more than a few weeks
- Ejaculation that happens too soon and causes distress
- No pregnancy after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse (6 months if the partner is over 35)
- Pain, swelling or a lump in the scrotum
- Low sex drive with tiredness or low mood
- Curvature or pain of the penis during erection
Treatments offered
| Condition | Treatment options |
|---|---|
| Erectile dysfunction | Lifestyle changes, tablets, treating hormones and diabetes, injections or devices when needed |
| Premature ejaculation | Behavioural techniques, counselling, medicines |
| Male infertility | Treating varicocele, infection and hormone problems; referral for assisted reproduction when needed |
| Varicocele | Observation or surgical repair when it affects fertility or causes pain |
| Phimosis | Creams or circumcision, including stapler circumcision |
Peyronie’s disease (curved penis)
Peyronie’s disease is scar tissue in the penis that causes a bend, pain or shortening during erections. It often begins with a painful phase that settles within months, followed by a stable phase. Treatment ranges from observation and medicines to traction devices and, for severe stable curvature that prevents intercourse, surgery. An andrologist can assess the curve and discuss options.
Sexual health, diabetes and heart disease
Men with diabetes are two to three times more likely to develop erection problems, often earlier in life, and ED can appear years before heart disease is diagnosed. Good control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, stopping smoking and regular exercise improve both sexual function and long-term health. See ED and heart disease.
Varicocele: symptoms and when to treat
A varicocele is an enlarged network of veins above the testis, usually on the left, often described as feeling like a “bag of worms”. Many cause no problems. Treatment is considered when there is a dull ache that limits activity, the testis on that side is shrinking, or semen quality is abnormal in a couple trying to conceive. Surgery ties off the abnormal veins through a small cut. See varicocele treatment in Jaipur.
Foreskin problems in adult men
A tight foreskin (phimosis), repeated infections (balanitis), splits in the foreskin and pain during intercourse are common, especially in men with diabetes. Steroid creams and treating infections help mild cases; circumcision, including quick stapler (ZSR) circumcision, is a lasting solution. See phimosis.
Questions men often ask
- Is it normal to have occasional erection problems? Yes; occasional difficulties are common. Problems on most occasions for more than a few weeks deserve a check-up.
- Do sexual problems mean low testosterone? Not always; blood flow, diabetes, stress and medicines are more common causes. A blood test clarifies it.
- Can stress cause ejaculation or erection problems? Yes, and the two often feed each other. Treatment addresses both the physical and psychological sides.
- Is masturbation harmful? No. It does not cause infertility, erectile dysfunction or weakness.
- Are online “stamina” products safe? Many contain hidden medicines or harmful ingredients. Speak to a doctor instead.
Medicines that can affect sexual function
Some common medicines can affect erections, ejaculation or sex drive, including certain blood pressure tablets, antidepressants, prostate medicines and hormone treatments. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; tell your doctor, who can often switch to an alternative with fewer sexual side effects. Bring a list of all your medicines, including supplements, to your andrology consultation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an andrologist and a sexologist?
An andrologist is a urologist trained to diagnose and treat the physical causes of male sexual and fertility problems, including with medicines and surgery. Counselling is part of care when stress or anxiety contributes.
Is the consultation confidential?
Yes. Consultations are private and your information is kept confidential.
Can erectile dysfunction and infertility be treated together?
Yes. They often share causes such as hormone problems or varicocele, and are assessed together in one andrology consultation.
Do I need to bring my partner?
It is helpful but not required. For fertility concerns, testing both partners early saves time.
Can diabetes cause erectile dysfunction?
Yes. Diabetes damages small blood vessels and nerves, and men with diabetes are more likely to develop erection problems. Good sugar control and treatment help.
Is it embarrassing to see an andrologist?
Many men feel hesitant, but andrologists discuss these problems every day. Consultations are private and respectful, and most men feel relieved once they understand the cause and the options.
How long does treatment for sexual problems take?
Many men notice improvement within weeks of starting treatment; behavioural techniques for premature ejaculation and lifestyle changes take a few months to show their full effect.
