Patients often ask which tablet will “melt” a kidney stone. The honest answer is that medicines do three different jobs: relieving pain, helping small stones pass, and preventing new stones. Very few stones dissolve with tablets. Here is how each group of medicines is used.
1. Medicines for kidney stone pain
Kidney stone pain (renal colic) is among the most severe pains people experience. Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as diclofenac are usually the first choice because they also reduce swelling in the ureter. Paracetamol and, in hospital, stronger painkillers are used when needed. People with kidney disease, stomach ulcers or heart problems need tailored advice, as anti-inflammatories are not safe for everyone.
2. Medicines that help a stone pass
Tamsulosin relaxes the lower ureter and can help stones of about 5–10 mm in the lower ureter pass sooner and with less pain. It is usually tried for up to four weeks with regular scans. Read the full tamsulosin guide. Herbal products such as Cystone are widely used but have weaker evidence.
3. Medicines to prevent new stones
| Medicine | Used for |
|---|---|
| Potassium citrate | Low urine citrate, calcium stones, and uric acid stones (it makes urine less acidic) |
| Thiazide diuretics | High urine calcium with recurrent calcium stones |
| Allopurinol | High uric acid with uric acid or calcium stones |
| Antibiotics | Infection (struvite) stones, alongside stone removal |
These are prescribed after a stone analysis and 24-hour urine or blood tests, because the right medicine depends on the stone type. See types of kidney stones.
Can any tablet dissolve a kidney stone?
Only uric acid stones reliably dissolve, using potassium citrate or similar medicines that raise urine pH over weeks to months. Calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones, which make up most stones, do not dissolve and must pass or be removed.
When medicines are not the answer
- Stones larger than about 10 mm, or 5–10 mm stones that do not move
- Any stone with fever or infection
- A stone blocking a single kidney or causing kidney function to fall
In these situations, laser kidney stone treatment is safer than waiting.
Do not take painkillers or other medicines regularly without medical advice, especially if you have kidney disease.
Frequently asked questions
Which tablet is best for kidney stone pain?

Can potassium citrate dissolve stones?
It can dissolve uric acid stones over time and helps prevent several stone types, but it does not dissolve calcium oxalate stones.
